Do you Take your Baby to the Doctor for a Rash?

My son has had a slight red rash on his back for about 2 weeks..just in a couple small patches and I thought it was just dry skin from bathing him everyday so I had been moisturizing it. The little areas are red and in the center there is dry skin. But this morning when I got him out of bed there were quite a few more patches, and he has two patches on his tummy now.

It suddenly occurred to me that he could be having an allergic reaction to his new formula that we have been supplementing him on probably for about that long, maybe a little less. It's nutramigen though, which is hypoallergenic, so I would be surprised if he was getting a rash from that. Other formulas we put him on just caused a tummy ache, but no rash. Would you take your baby to the doctor for a rash like that? I guess I will call the pediatrician tomorrow, but just wondering what everyone else would do. Thanks!
No new fabric softeners or anything and he doesn't have a fever. I hadn't thought about the soap residues in the shower though, thanks.

Yeah I think I would. It seems like the lotion isn’t helping and it’s just getting worse, so a quick stop at the doctors wouldn’t hurt. Have you switched your laundry detergent or fabric softener? Or even any soaps, the residue from the soaps you use can even still be in the tub when he bathes, so that might always be the cause of it.

If it hasn’t gone away by now, and since it is spreading…I’d take him in just to be on the safe side. And I’m a mom who hardly ever takes her kids to the doctor.

I have taken my son to the doctor when his rash covered his whole body or when he had a fever. But the rule of thumb I follow is… if taking my son to the doctor will make me relax then I go. Always go with your gut. If it is due to the formula then maybe the doctor can talk to you about new ones to try. I know when my brother in laws were babies they had to use a formula that you could only get by the doctor ordering. I hope this helps.

Is he showing any other signs of being unwell? Have you done a glass test on the rash? Press a glass tumbler against the rash to make sure that it fades when there is pressure on it…if it doesn’t, then take him to the hospital. Rashes aren’t something you want to mess around with when it comes to babies. He could even have scarlet fever…Does he have a temperature or anything? There are so many possibilities.

If it was an allergic reaction to his formula, then he would generally be vomiting more than usual or having loose stools or something after his feeding – more so than usual anyway.

Take him to a doctor to be on the safe side. Good luck x

I’ve taken her for a rash before. What I would do is call your doctors see if they can recommend anything or if they think you should just come in. That’s what I would do… Every time I have a question I call them and talk to my doctor or the advice nurse, and then just go from there. Best of Luck!!!

Since it hasn’t gone away in two weeks, and in some ways has gotten worse because is has spread then i would definitely make an app, just to be safe. Also try using California Baby products. My daughter has really sensitive skin, and her cheeks would get a little red and bumpy and i started using some of their lotions and her skin looks so much better. Good Luck

Since it’s not going away I would go ahead and take him in. Normally I wouldn’t take my son to the doctor for just a rash, but it sounds like your son needs to be looked at.
